Early Head Start Preschool Expands Broadway Campus at First Church
At its meeting Tuesday evening, the Session agreed to help the Early Head Start preschool expand its Broadway Campus here at First Church. The preschool, a tenant here since 2009, was offered one additional classroom and the use of two offices, enabling the preschool to serve additional families in the surrounding neighborhood. Early Head Start is a federally funded, community-based program for low-income families with pregnant women, infants and toddlers up to age three. It is administered by the City of Oakland.
Part of First Church’s mission is to share its extraordinary campus with community groups who will partner with the church in God’s work of reconciliation, peace-making, and care for the disadvantaged. The additional rental income received from the preschool expansions will be re-invested in the church’s facilities, helping to ensure that the campus is available to the community for another generation.
